Jolliburglar
In Jolliburglar, two corporate fast-food entities are juxtaposed and layered over one another to visually “fight” for the attention of the viewer. Using the Jollibee figure as a stand-in for Filipino culture, the artwork imagines a “reverse colonialism” through the “Filipino empire” of taste. It proposes that by the power of Filipino food—even if made corporate and a farcry from homecooked meals—Filipinos can claim control over their colonizer’s cultures.
